By then, pantyhose had improved considerably but I still hated them. But what did they know? None of the boys I dated complained about my stockings!īut when I started college in the Fall of 1969, my Mom finally 'won' and convinced me to ditch my stockings in favor of pantyhose so i would 'fit in' better. My friends told me that boys wouldn't date me if I clung to wearing stockings because it would give me a 'granny' image. This also meant that I couldn't wear my skirts quite as short as my friends (but my Mom wouldn't let me anyway!).

By the spring of 1969 I think I was the last girl in my class still wearing gartered stockings (Karen being Karen again!). Remember, this was a time when skirts or dresses were required for school. When our Senior year began in the fall of 1968, most of the girls in my class were wearing pantyhose. My Mom wanted me to wear them all the time for modesty's sake but I refused, pointing out that *she* didn't wear them at all.īut by the spring of 1968 (during my Junior year in HS) the switch to pantyhose began as hemlines continued to rise. You still had to wear a panty girdle to hold them up so what was the point? Most of my friends and I received pantyhose for Christmas in 1967 and almost universaly, we hated them. Pantyhose in the 1960s were expensive and ill fitting. Pantyhose, which started to become common in my area around Christmas 1967, would appear to have offered the ideal solution as hemlines rose even further. And they were.around 1967 I had several pair with psychedelic paterns that were really quite cute when seen. And my friends and I thought this was perfectly allright because pettipants were *meant* to be seen. Being the modest kid that I was, I wore pettipants over my panty girdle so even when wearing a relatively short skirt, all that was visible were my pettipants. Some girls wore garter belts without pettipants although this was rare in my school after 1965 or so. The lucky girls with less strict mothers continued to wear garter belts, often with pettipants to hide their stocking tops and garters. Many of my friends switched to stretch nylons at this time to ease the gartering problem but I stuck to the non-stretch stockings as I hated the scratchy feel of the stretch hose. But as hemlines rose, my friends and I increasingly preferred panty girdles to keep our stocking tops more or less hidden. Stockings that were too long bagged at the knees and sagged at the ankles while stockings that were too short wound up being gartered too tightly and ran. I hated the panty girdle - at first - because the garters were difficult to attach and there was no adjustment for length. And the girdle could be pulled up or down a bit to compensate for varying stocking length. Initially, I liked the open bottom girdle best as it was easy to attach my garters.

I was expected to wear the girdles any time I wore hose unless I was wearing a full skirt when a garter belt would be OK. So when I received my first bra in 1963, I also received my first girdles.an open bottom for 'dress' wear and a long leg panty girdle for casual wear and with slacks. My Mom believed that if a girl was old enough to wear a bra, her figure needed to be controlled with a girdle. But as hemlines rose through the 1960s, this became an increasingly difficult task.

As you might immagine it was particularly troublesome for school girls who wanted to be fashionable yet modest.įrom the time my Mother bought me my first pair of stockings in 1961, she stressed that stocking tops were to be kept hidden at all times.
